The process
Refined chocolate can still carry fine cocoa grains that haven’t been fully worked. This skid uses a vibratory separator and a pump to pass the refined chocolate along and hold back the coarse fraction.
Why everything is jacketed
Chocolate is only a liquid while it’s warm. If it cools anywhere in the flow path, it sets, and chocolate setting inside a pipe, pump, or screen means a full strip-down. So the piping is jacketed to keep heat in the product the whole way through, with no cold section where it can seize. Every part of the flow path had to be considered thermally, not just hydraulically.
One package
The skid carries the separator, pump and motor, a surge tank, a funnel, and a control panel with its own e-stop, all on a single frame on casters. Building it as a self-contained package means it can be tested before it ships, rolled to where it’s needed, connected, and moved again if the plant changes. Sanitary quick-clamp fittings let the product path come apart by hand for cleaning.
Opportunities and struggles
The skid had a tight size limit, and I didn’t meet it the first time. While arranging equipment to satisfy the process and the flow path, I let part of the assembly hang over the sides of the frame, which is easy to overlook in a model. It came up in review with the customer, who said it wasn’t acceptable, and I reworked the layout to bring everything inside the footprint. They were right. A skid that overhangs its own frame can’t be handled, set down, or moved without something catching, which defeats the reason for building it as a skid. I learned to hold the footprint as a hard requirement from the start instead of fitting it in afterward.
